The advertisements we see on our social media feeds are indeed tailored to us. You search for something on Google, and the next thing you know it is in almost every ad you see. I love to bake; therefore, I see a lot of baking and cooking product ads. I’ve recently fallen in love with baking sugar cookies, so when I saw the ad on FB for these mesh baking mats that would give my cookies a more professional look and promote more even baking, you know I had to try them!
THE MAT
The Cookie Countess claims that their silicone mesh baking mat will prevent sticking and spreading, promote even baking, and give your cookies a cute little woven design on the back. The mat comes in 3 sizes, large (19.7 x 13.8″), medium (16.5 x 11.5″), and small (14.5 x 9.6″). They can be ordered individually, or you can order the 3-pack, which contains one of each size. I ordered the bundle pack, along with several other items (some of which will be up for review later).
The shipping was surprisingly fast. I received my mats within 5 days of ordering. I’ll admit, I was impressed by the quality of all of the items I ordered and couldn’t wait to test them out. After all, looks can be deceiving. I had to find out if these baking mats lived up to their promise.
THE TEST
After receiving my mesh baking mats, I rinsed them in warm water as directed and allowed them to air dry. Once they were completely dry, I lined my cookie sheets and baked up a batch of my delicious brown sugar cookies. According to The Cookie Countess website, there is no need to adjust oven temperature or baking times. I checked my cookies after their normal 12-minute baking time and found that the cookies needed to bake a little longer. I ended up baking the cookies an additional 5 minutes. Though, they still looked lighter than normal, I decided it was due to the more even baking. I usually watch for browning of the edges; yet, these cookies looked very uniform. There was no browning of the edges that I was used to seeing.
The cookies looked perfect. They were very evenly baked and looked amazing. I honestly couldn’t wait to flip them over and see how the bottoms turned out. I was not disappointed! The fine mesh weave of the silicone mat created a beautiful and professional look. I was very impressed with the look of the cookies, but what about the taste? I mean, did they really bake as evenly as they appeared? The only way to find out was to bite into one and make sure they were perfectly baked all the way through. Once again, I wasn’t disappointed.
CONS
If you’re anything like me, I know what you’re thinking. There must be some cons, right? Well, I guess the short answer is “yes”. But honestly, they are so minor that they almost don’t even count. So, here they are:
- According to The Cookie Countess website, if you want to immediately use the mat for a second batch of cookies, you need to remove the mat and place it on a new, cool cookie sheet (however, I always allow my cookies to cool on the pan for a few minutes before removing, so this was not a problem for me)
- The mat absorbs oils and butter, though according to The Cookie Countess, this is not an issue; the mat can be used several times before washing. I cooked multiple batches without any problems
- Made of food-safe fiberglass silicone mesh; however, this is not a problem as long as you adhere to the manufacturer’s directions to not cut the mat. Cutting of the mat can release fiberglass particles in the air.
- Required a little more baking time. However, according to The Cookie Countess website, no baking time adjustments are needed. I recommend checking your cookies at their normal baking time and adjusting if needed.
PROS
In case you can’t tell, I am a fan of these mats. I will continue to use them for all of my sugar cookies. Here is a rundown of the pros:
- Even baking
- No sticking
- No spreading (As of the time of writing this, I have only used the mats for baking homemade cutout sugar cookies, as this is the primary reason I ordered the mats. I have not tested them on other types of cookies. Be sure to check for updates. If I try out some other cookies on the baking mats, I will be sure to let you know what I think.)
- Easy to clean (The mats can be used multiple times before washing is needed; simply rinse in warm water for easy cleaning. If a deeper cleaning is required or desired, wash in warm soapy water and rinse several times as soap can become trapped in the fine mesh.)
- The weave design…it looks amazing! (the bottoms of the cookies look flawless and professional)
THE FINAL WRAP
If you’re looking for a way to ensure more even baking of your sugar cookies, these mats are the answer. As I mentioned earlier, I have not tried them out on any other types of cookies yet. Though, I certainly intend to do so. Not only will your cookies bake evenly, they will look professional.
Overall, the mats lived up to their claims. I did have to bake my cookies longer than normal, but for the look and quality of my cookies after baking on the silicone mesh mats, I didn’t mind at all.
I guess the only thing I did not cover here was cost. When I first ordered them, I thought they seemed a little pricey (but, it may be that I’m just cheap….and remember, somewhat of a skeptic). But, since receiving and trying the mats, I now say they are 100% reasonably priced and worth every penny. Not to mention, how many mats do you really need? I typically only use 2 baking sheets at a time, so it’s not like I need to buy 10 of them. Below are the links to the silicone baking mats with the purchase price:
- Small (14.5 x 9.6) …$4.99 ea
- Medium (16.5 x 11.5) …$7.99 ea
- Large (19.7 x 13.8) …$10.49 ea
- Bundle ( 1 of each) …$19.99
Well, there you have it. If you have tried these mats, I’d love to know what you think. I am loving mine! Also, if you have any baking or cookie products you’d love to see me or my sister test out, just send us an email. We are happy to take a look at it and tell you what we think.
